Information Pravasi series - Bhivgad Fort/Bhimgad Fort

bhivgad fort karjat

Today let's talk about an unexplored trek in the Karjat region. There are many forts and treks in the Karjat region, Raigad district. Here you will find many forts/treks ranging from easy to difficult grade trek. Few of the forts are famous and the rest are unexplored or only a few trekkers visit them. One such unfamiliar fort and a simple trek is Bhivgad fort. This fort is also known as the Bhimgad fort. The height of the fort is about 800 feet and half an hour is enough to reach the fort top from the base.

If you are trekking for the first time, it can take up to an hour. This trek can be done from two villages. The first is the Vadap village and the second village is Gaurkamat, just a few meters ahead of Vadap village. It takes about the same time to reach the fort top from both villages. By going from Vadap village, we enter the fort from the south side, while from Gaurkamat village we enter the fort from the north side. I have done this trek from Vadap village. The trek from both the villages comes in easy grade and low endurance level.

The nearest railway station is Karjat and there is a direct transport facility from the station to Vadap village but you will have to pay a little more for that. Vadap village is at a distance of about 8 km from Karjat station. I had come directly to Vadap village on my own bike. You can drive your own car/bike from Mumbai - Kalamboli - Panvel - Chowk - Karjat - Vadap. Vadap village is around 90 Km from Mumbai and it will take 2-3 hours to reach there.

Places to see on the fort include rock-carved water tanks, some remnants of the fort, carved steps, a cave, and a panoramic view of the surrounding scenic area from the fort. At the base of the Vadap village, there is a temple of Goddess Gaurmata.

The best season to visit the fort is the monsoon and you can also enjoy the seasonal waterfalls nearby. After trekking, we came back to the base of Vadap village and went to the waterfall again. It was later we got to know that a path leads directly to the waterfall on the way down. In such a place, it is impossible to resist the temptation to get wet under a waterfall. We enjoyed it too.

Trekking from the Vadap village, after about 20-25 minutes you will come to a gorge (Khind) from where the way on the left leads to the fort and the way on the right leads to Dhak Bahiri trek. This is a great destination if you are planning to do a range trek.
