Kundmala potholes

Maharashtra has got historical as well as geographical importance. You might know the world-famous potholes in the Kukadi river at Nighoj in Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra. But similar nature artwork can also be seen in the Indrayani river in the Pune district. That place is Kundmala. Today we are going to learn about the wonderful geographical miracle of nature at this place in the series "Geography Pravasi".

How to reach Kundmala!

On the old Mumbai-Pune highway, we headed towards Kundmala by the route just in front of Ghoravadeshwar hill near Talegaon Dabhade. Begdewadi railway station is nearby. Kundmala is just 2 km away from the station.

Therefore, most of the tourists come to Kundmala by walking from Begdewadi railway station. Also, many tourists come here in their own cars. The distance from Pune to Kundmala is about 30 km. On weekends, you will see long queues of cars near Kundmala.

The swirling water and the cascading flow of small waterfalls overwhelmed the mind with a different energy.

A small bridge has been constructed over the river. This bridge is just enough for people and bikes.

The scenic surroundings of Kundmala are certainly mind-blowing. There is a temple of Kund Devi Mata on a huge rock in the river bed.

How Potholes are formed?

Potholes are called "Ranjankhalge" in the Marathi language and "Kund" by local people. This sculpture was made with continuously flowing water.

It takes thousands of years to create such a masterpiece by nature.

A riverbed may contain layers of hard and soft rock. Along with the flow of fast-flowing water in the river bed, stones also flow.

Friction between the stones and the rock causes the erosion of soft rocks while the hard rock remains intact. Stones are stuck in these deep areas on the rocks and with the strong flow of water, these stones rotate around and turn the deep areas into semi-circular pits.

Due to this action over the years, the pits gradually increase in size and transform into Potholes. At Kundmala, one can see Potholes of different heights, size, and depths.
