"Gaurmata Devi Temple - Bhivgad Fort"
Religious Pravasi Series - Forts and its Village Deities

There is a temple of Gaurmata Devi at the base of Bhivgad fort in Karjat taluka. The hill in front of the temple is Bhivgad Fort. Villagers worship this goddess passionately. On one side of the temple is Vadap village and on the other side is Gaurkamat village. The name of the nearby village Gaurkamat may have been derived from the name of this goddess. One can trek to Bhivgad fort from both these villages.

One hour is enough to reach the top of the fort from both villages. When I trekked to Bhivgad fort, in a conversation with a villager, he told me that once a year a festival is celebrated here with great gaiety like a fair. There is no human settlement adjacent to the temple, so this temple at the base of the fort stands out even more. Some of the places worth seeing are the water tanks, pillar tank, cave, the path from Gaurakamat village to the fort dug in the huge rock, fortifications, and other ruins. One can also enjoy the seasonal waterfall (Vadap waterfall) beside the fort from Vadap village.
