Information Pravasi Series - Songiri Fort
There are many forts, and treks in Karjat Taluka, Raigad District and some of them will be familiar to you. But Songiri Fort in this Taluka is very unknown. The number of people visiting the fort is less. So the trek route is not that clearly marked throughout. Usually, this trek is done from Palasadari station and from the Newali village. The fort is also known as Palasdari Fort. From Palasadari station, passing through the train track, a route from a nearby tunnel leads to the fort. Also, from the station, one can reach Avalas village and then Newali village to reach the fort. Whichever way you go, finding the right path is a bit difficult, especially during monsoons.
The height of the fort is about 2500 feet and it takes 2 hours to reach the fort from Newali village. Newali village is 70 km from Mumbai and 90 km from Pune. Sometimes the path leads to the fort through dense thickets, sometimes through the plateau, and sometimes through tall grass. There are two water tanks on the fort. One tank has water while the other tank is dry. Some remains of fortifications can also be seen at the fort. The fort must have been used for surveillance.
Since the fort is at a very strategic location, many forts, and Sahyadri mountain peaks in the Raigad and Pune districts can be seen from here. Sondai Fort, Matheran, Peb Fort (Vikatgad), Prabalgad, Irshalgad, and Morbe Dam reservoir can be seen in the west. A peak in the Khandala ghat catches our attention when looking a little to the east in the south. That mountain is Nagfani hill (Duke's Nose). Rajmachi forts i.e. Manranjan and Shrivardhan forts can be seen in the east. To the north is Dhak Bahiri which can be identified by the adjacent Kalkarai peak.
The fort is surrounded by Sahyadri mountains and forts on all sides and my favorite Pravas is to see the forts and peaks of the surrounding area from one place. So this trek turned out to be one of the unforgettable Pravas of my life.
