Geotags Pravasi Series - Forts, Pinnacles and Ghats near Naneghat Mountain

We traveled from Mumbai to the Parbhani District of Maharashtra for my wedding in Tempo. We were around 25-30 close relatives together. Crossed Kalyan - Murbad from Mumbai and stopped for tea and breakfast near Tokavade village in Murbad taluka. Of course, many Sahyadri pinnacles were visible in front. There are some forts, some ghats, and some peaks. From Siddhagad Fort to Malshej Ghat, I explored many places in between. These vast Sahyadri peaks cannot be captured in a mobile camera. So sharing a photo of some forts, peaks, and ghats near Naneghat. We will get information about these places in this blog through our "Geotags Pravasi" series.

It is very easy to recognize the Nanacha Anghuta Pinnacle (Pinnacles having shaped like a thumb) in this hill range and after that, I started to find the surrounding forts and peaks. Vaishakhare village is a little further from Tokavade village. The naneghat trek can be done from this base village. Naneghat was a trade route during the Satavahana period. This ghat connects Junnar and Konkan. Many forts were built to guard this trading ghat route. One of them is the fort and the back of Naneghat i.e. Jivdhan Fort. If you are coming from Pune, you can do this trek from the base village Ghatghar in Junnar. Many trekkers from Mumbai - Thane, first trekked to Naneghat and then proceed to Jivdhan Fort after spending the night in Naneghat caves. A favorite peak for rock climbers is the Vanarlingi Pinnacle near Jeevdhan Fort. It was also very clearly visible to me. Apart from Jivdhan fort, Chawand fort or Prasannagad Fort, Nimgiri fort and Hanumantgad Fort, Hadsar fort and Shivneri fort in Junnar were also built to guard this ghat route.

If we look further to the right, we can see another ghat similar to Naneghat. It is known for its V-shaped valley. This ghat is known as Darya Ghat. It connects the two villages i.e. Amboli and Palu. It is a very unfamiliar place. Few people only know this place. Although no one comes here throughout the year, but many nomads visit here during the rainy season. The reason behind that is the seasonal waterfall and scenic surroundings. You can reach here from the base village Amboli in Junnar. Dhakoba fort is very close to this ghat and the trek to this fort is from the base village Amboli itself.

Ganapati Gadad Caves are hidden in the hills not far from Dhakoba Fort. It can trek from the base village Sonawale near Palu village in Murbad. These caves are said to be of the Pandava period. If you look further to the right, Ahupe Ghat, Gorakhgad Fort, Machhindragad Fort, and Siddhagad Fort can be seen.

Now let us go back to Naneghat and look at some forts, ghats, and peaks on the left. Looking to the left of Naneghat, many mountain peaks of different heights attract our attention. That is Varhadi Pinnacles. At the base of these peaks, lies the Bhairavagad of Moroshi or Moroshicha Bhairavgad, a challenge for trekkers. There are many forts named Bhairavgad in Maharashtra. So these forts are named after the village at the base of that fort. Hence, this Moroshi's Bhairavgad is named after the base village Moroshi.

If we look further to the left, we reach the Malshej Ghat. Once you cross the Malshej Ghat, you will see Sindola Fort and the vast reservoir of Pimpaljoga Dam. On the opposite side of the ghat are Harishchandragad Fort in Ahmednagar district, Bhairavagad of Kothale, and many forts in Akole taluka.
