Micro Pravasi Series - Shivaraya's Rajmudra, Its Meaning and Contemporary History
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Rajmudra should be known to all of us. We must have seen the picture of Rajmudra on photos, posters, and flags during Shivaji Maharaj's birth anniversary, death anniversary, or even in some political rally. The text of Rajmudra must be memorized by many people, some have tried to read it and some have not been able to read it as it is. But when we first read it, 'what does that text mean!', this question everyone must have asked.
Today, we will know the meaning of the text on this royal seal or Rajmudra, which seems to indicate the establishment of Swaraj (Self-government) by Shivaji Maharaj, through the series "Micro Pravasi". We started this series to know about small but very important things and the story behind them.
Contemporary History of Rajmudra
Swaraj oath taken at Raireshwara Temple, Preparations in the Maval Valle, accompanied by young Mavals who believed to "live for Shivaji and die for Shivaji". Now Shivaji Maharaj's enthusiasm increased a thousandfold. Putting aside their differences, the Marathas of twelve Mavals, who were inspired by the idea of Shivaji's Swarajya, came together.
Royal Seal of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
The Jagir/Jahagiri was already being administered in the name of Shivaji Maharaj. Shahaji Raje created an independent Rajmudra/Royal seal for Shivaji.
It reads –
प्रतिपच्चंद्रलेखेव वर्धिष्णुर्विश्ववंदीता ।।
शाहसूनोः शिवस्यैषा मुद्रा भद्राय राजते ।।
Pratipachchandralekhev Vardhishnuvrishwavandita ।।
Shahsuno: Shivsyaisha Mudra Bhadraya Rajate ।।
It means that -
"This seal will grow in splendour like the new moon. This seal of Shivaji, the son of Shahaji, receiving homage from the whole world denotes the welfare of the people"
This Rajmudra, which says this, was a sign of the establishment of self-government/Swarajya.
At that time, the Royal seal was usually carved in the Persian language, but Shivaj's Rajmudra's text was in the Sanskrit language. The thoughts and wisdom of Shahaji Raje who created this royal seal with a deep meaning can be easily seen. Every word in the royal seal was thought out. Maharaj's future goals and intentions were determined from that mudra. All the people came to know that as they want Swarajya, they want their own language, they want their own religion, they don't even want to hate other religions and Shivaji Maharaj started his administration for public welfare.
The First Conquest of Swaraj
What is Swarajya without forts! The one who controlled the forts also controlled the surrounding territory and, therefore, all talk of Swaraj without the control of the forts was meaningless. A hill fort gave strategic support to the ruler and Shivaji Maharaj decided to capture one at a suitable time. For this purpose, he had selected the fort of Torana. He captured the fort and thus laid the foundation of Hindavi Swaraj.

Shivaji Maharaj’s first conquest was the capture of Torna Fort in 1645, when he was just 16 years old. This victory was followed by the conquest of other forts such as Chakan, Kondana, and Rajgad. Shivaji Maharaj’s military campaigns were aimed at establishing a Maratha kingdom that would be free from the rule of the Mughals and the Adil Shahi dynasty. Shivaji Maharaj’s life and legacy are a testament to his courage, leadership, and vision. Visit Life Story of Shivaji Maharaj for his complete biography.
