Information Pravasi Series - Chawand Fort / Prasannagad Fort
Chavand Fort also known as Prasannagad is about 110 km from Pune station and 15 km from Junnar. This fort is known by many other names. Like Chamundgad, Chavandas, Chamundgiri, etc. At the base of the fort, there is a small village called "Chawand". From Pune or Swargate catch an ST bus to reach Junnar first and from Junnar again catch an ST bus for Chawand village. The fort can be reached by the steps built by the forest department on the path passing through the houses of this village.
The height of the fort is about 3400 feet and the size from the base is about 650 feet. Chawand fort trek comes in the easy category and it takes 30 to 45 minutes to reach the fort from the base. Coming up the narrow path, the entrance of the fort with Shri Ganesh carved under the arch welcomes you.
There are many things to visit on the fort. The ruins of Sadar and castle, many water tanks, Pushkarni lake and Shiva temple, ancient toilet, the temple of Chawanda Mata at the highest point of the fort, group of Saptamatruka water tanks, caves, cannon, well, etc. Apart from that, Varhadi Pinnacles, Nimgiri Fort and Hanumantgad Fort, Hadsar Fort, and Manikdoh Dam Reservoir can be seen from the fort.
If you have time, visit the Kukdeshwar temple which is just 4 km from the fort. Also, if you want to do a range trek in Junnar, there are many places nearby such as Naneghat - Jeevdhan Fort - Nimgiri Fort and Hanumantgad - Hadsar Fort - Shivneri Fort - Lenyadri.
